چکیده

We report recent results from the ALICE experiment the Large Hadron Collider on open charmed hadron production in pp collisions at ? s “ 2.76 and 7 TeV, and Pb–Pb collisions at sNN “ 2.76 TeV. Open charmed hadrons are kinematically fully reconstructed in the hadronic decay channels D0 Ñ K ́π`, D` Ñ K ́π`π`, and D ̊`p2010q Ñ D0π`and identified through their invariant mass. Combinatorial background is minimized by selecting a displaced vertex topology. Inclusive charm and beauty production is measured by detecting electrons (muons) from semi-leptonic decays of open charmed and beauty hadrons in the central (forward) region. Comparison to results from state-of-the-art QCD calculations is given. First results on nuclear modifications factors in Pb–Pb collisions from hadronic and semi-leptonic decays are presented.

Charged particle production in Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions at ALICE

Global event observables are of fundamental importance in characterizing the properties of the strongly interacting medium created in heavy-ion collisions. The ALICE experiment at LHC measured charged particle multiplicity distributions in Pb-Pb collisions at √ sNN = 2.76 TeV in a wide pseudo-rapidity range (−5 < η < 5.5) exploiting different techniques. The production of high transverse moment...

Exploring the LHC medium with electromagnetic probes

Heavy-ion collisions will enter a new era with the start of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A first short run with proton-proton collisions at the injection energy of 0.9 TeV will be followed by a longer one with pp collisions at 10 TeV. First Pb-Pb collisions at √ sNN=5.5 TeV will take place in 2009. Three experiments (ALICE, ATLAS, and CMS) will study both pp and Pb-Pb collisions. A sel...

Identified light-flavour particle production measured with ALICE at the LHC as a probe of soft QCD and hot hadronic matter

ALICE is a general-purpose heavy-ion experiment able to identify particles over a wide momentum range thanks to excellent vertexing and tracking performance, low material budget and different Particle IDentification (PID) techniques. In this paper the measurement of the production of identified light flavour particles in pp, p–Pb and Pb–Pb collisions is reported. It is of fundamental importance...

Preparation for heavy-flavour measurements with ALICE at the LHC

ALICE [1] will study nucleus–nucleus and proton–proton collisions at the LHC. The main goal of the experiment is to investigate the properties of QCD matter at the extreme energy densities that will be reached in Pb–Pb collisions. Heavy quarks (charm and beauty) are regarded as powerful tools for this study. After briefly reviewing the ALICE heavy-flavour program, we will describe the preparati...

Detection of D mesons via hadronic decays in Pb–Pb collisions at LHC with ALICE

The ALICE experiment is devoted to the study of heavy-ion collisions at the CERN LHC collider. We present the results of a feasibility study for the detection of D → Kπ decays in Pb–Pb collisions with ALICE. 1 Physics motivation The aim of the ALICE [1] experiment is to study the behaviour of nuclear matter in the conditions of high densities and temperatures in which a transition to a deconfin...
